Confidential, authorship-first academic support

STEM & Technical Support

Technical work fails in specific places: a pointer that outlives its memory, a boundary condition that over-constrains a model, a proof step that assumes its conclusion, a bibliography that will not compile. We help students, researchers and professionals find those places, understand them and build work they can defend.

Overview

This pillar brings together support for the technical layer of study and research: writing and debugging code, designing databases and documenting software; setting up engineering calculations, CAD models and simulations; writing proofs, building mathematical models and solving optimization problems; and producing the documents and records that science depends on, from LaTeX theses to journal figures and lab notebooks.

The common thread is verification. Code is checked with tests and minimal reproducible examples, simulations with mesh convergence and benchmarks, models with sensitivity analysis, figures against journal and image-integrity rules. We teach and apply these checks so that results are trustworthy and you can explain how you know.

What we deliver depends on who you are and what the work is for. Students on taught courses receive tutoring, parallel worked examples and reviews of work they produced themselves; we do not complete graded assignments, problem sets or exams. Thesis researchers receive method support and reviews, with assistance acknowledged as their institution requires. Researchers and professionals can also commission code, models, templates and figures that they own.

Who this is for

  • Undergraduate and master's students in computer science, engineering, mathematics and the sciences
  • PhD students and postdocs whose research depends on code, simulation, modeling or complex documents
  • Researchers in other fields (health, economics, social science) who need programming, optimization or figure support
  • Principal investigators and research groups standardizing templates, figures and data organization
  • Professionals learning a technical tool or prototyping a model before wider rollout

How we approach this work

Reproduce before fixing

Whether it is a failing program, a diverging solver or a broken LaTeX build, we first reproduce the problem and reduce it to a minimal example. That isolates the cause and shows you how to do the same next time.

Verify, then trust

Every technical result is checked against something independent: tests, analytical solutions, mesh refinement, hand calculations, benchmark data or a second solver.

State assumptions and units

Engineering and modeling work lists its assumptions, sources and units explicitly, so reviewers can see where results apply and where they do not.

Leave you able to maintain it

Code, templates, figures and models come with documentation, editable sources and a walkthrough, so you are not dependent on us for the next change.

Match help to the assessment context

For graded coursework we explain and review; for research and professional work we can build. We ask early which applies.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from programming or math tutoring?

Subject tutoring follows a course syllabus from the ground up. This pillar focuses on specific technical tasks and artifacts: debugging and reviewing code, checking a simulation setup, coaching proof writing, formulating an optimization model, fixing a LaTeX thesis or preparing journal figures. Many people use both; the first conversation helps decide which fits.

Do you work with my files directly, or only by screen sharing?

Both. Tutoring and debugging usually happen live with screen sharing or a shared editor, with you at the keyboard where possible. Reviews, templates, figures and research builds are done on files or repositories you share, then explained in a walkthrough.

What if I use software you don't list?

Tell us. Many problems are about concepts that transfer across tools, such as numerical stability, formulation, meshing or document structure. If a question depends on a tool we do not know well enough, we say so before starting rather than learning on your time.

Can you sign off engineering calculations or designs?

No. Our engineering support is educational and research-focused. Designs that will be built, installed or operated must be checked and approved by a licensed or chartered engineer under the applicable codes.

How do you handle confidential code, data or unpublished results?

Files are used only for your request and not reused elsewhere. We can work from anonymized or synthetic samples, private repositories or restricted shares, and sign a confidentiality agreement. Tell us about any export control, patent or ethics restrictions at the start.

What affects the cost of technical work?

The main factors are the format (live sessions, written review or a build), the size and condition of the code, model or document, specialized software or computing needs, and how much documentation and verification you want. We quote after seeing a short description and, ideally, a sample file.
