Academic Writing Support
Most writing problems are thinking problems in disguise: an unclear question, a thesis that cannot be argued, evidence that sits next to a claim without supporting it. We help you see those problems in your own drafts and fix them yourself, through structured feedback, outline critique, argument mapping and annotated examples.
Overview
Academic writing support here means working on your draft, your plan and your reasoning — not producing assignments for you to submit. A typical engagement starts with the brief and marking criteria, moves to a critique of your outline or thesis, and then to margin comments on a draft that explain why a paragraph is not working and what kind of revision would help. Where an example teaches faster than a comment, we write a short annotated model paragraph on a different prompt, so you can see the move without being able to copy it.
The pillar is organized by the kind of document you are producing. Essays cover argumentative, analytical, reflective and exam writing. Research and term papers cover topic refinement, coursework proposals, annotated bibliographies and position or white papers. Case studies and reports cover the framework-driven genres of business, nursing, law, lab and technical courses. Coursework covers the smaller, frequent tasks — discussion posts, response papers, précis, portfolios and capstones. Discipline-specific support adapts all of this to the conventions of your field, from history's use of primary sources to the hedged claims of a psychology results section.
Because many of the people we work with write in English as an additional language, feedback distinguishes between problems of argument, problems of organization and problems of expression, and tells you which ones matter most for the next draft. You get fewer, better-targeted comments rather than a page covered in red.
Who this is for
- Secondary-school and undergraduate students who want to understand why their essays score where they do and what to change
- Master's students meeting unfamiliar genres such as reflective logs, policy critiques or white papers for the first time
- Students writing in English as an additional language who need feedback that separates argument issues from language issues
- Returning and part-time students rebuilding academic writing habits alongside work or caring responsibilities
- Students with a supervisor, tutor or writing center that recommended more structured feedback on drafts

Services by area
Essay Support
Essays reward a clear, arguable answer to the exact question set, developed paragraph by paragraph with evidence that does real work. We help you build that skill across the essay types you meet at school and university.
- Essay Writing Coaching and Draft Feedback “Someone to explain why my essays lose marks and help me fix my own drafts”

- Timed and Exam Essay Practice with Rubric-Based Feedback “Practice writing essays under time pressure before my exams, with honest marking”
Research & Term Papers
Research papers ask you to find a question worth answering, locate and judge sources, and build an argument from them. We coach each of those stages, from a vague topic to a defensible thesis and a well-organized draft.
- Research Paper and Term Paper Support, From Topic to Final Draft “Help narrowing my term paper topic, building a thesis and getting feedback as I write”

Writing Support by Discipline
Good writing in history is not the same as good writing in chemistry. We adapt feedback to your discipline's expectations about evidence, structure, voice, hedging and citation.
How we approach this work
Start from the brief and the rubric
We read the assignment prompt, directive verbs and marking criteria before the draft. Feedback is then tied to what the marker is actually assessing, not to a generic idea of good writing.
Argument before sentences
We check the thesis, the claim sequence and the evidence-to-claim links first. Polishing sentences inside a paragraph that should be cut or moved wastes your revision time.
Explain, then model at a distance
Comments explain the principle (for example, why a warrant is missing). When a model helps, it is written on a parallel topic and annotated, so it teaches a technique rather than supplying text.
Prioritized, finite feedback
Each round names the three or four changes that will move the draft most, in order, so you know what to do first when time is short.
Your voice, your authorship
We do not rewrite your paragraphs into ours. Language edits are limited and marked, and we are open about our role so you can acknowledge support if your institution asks.
Frequently asked questions
Is using academic writing support allowed at my university?
Most universities allow feedback, tutoring and limited editing, and many run writing centers that do the same kind of work. Rules differ on how much editing is permitted and whether support must be declared. Check your course handbook or academic integrity policy; if it is unclear, ask your instructor. We are happy for you to describe exactly what we did, and we keep notes of our comments so you can show them if asked.
What is the difference between writing support and editing?
Writing support works on thinking and structure: your question, thesis, argument order, use of evidence and genre conventions. Editing works on the surface of a finished draft: grammar, clarity, consistency and referencing. If your ideas are still moving, start with writing support; editing an unstable draft usually means paying for changes you will later delete.
Will you rewrite my paragraphs?
No. We comment, question and explain, and where a demonstration helps we write a short annotated model on a parallel topic. Small language corrections may be made directly and are tracked so you can see them. Substantive rewriting of graded work would make it less yours, which is both an integrity problem and a poor way to learn.
Can you help if English is not my first language?
Yes, and we plan for it. Feedback separates argument, organization and language issues, explains recurring patterns (such as article use or hedging) with short rules you can apply, and limits comments to the patterns that affect meaning or marks most.
How early should I get in touch before a deadline?
Ideally when you have a plan or outline, not the night before submission. Feedback on an outline can save days of drafting in the wrong direction. Short turnarounds are possible for focused feedback on a complete draft, but not for multiple rounds.
Which citation styles do you work with?
APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago (18th edition, notes-bibliography and author-date), Harvard variants used by individual universities, IEEE, Vancouver and OSCOLA among others. Because Harvard has no single official version, we follow your institution's own guide when you send it.
