Editing by Document Type

An essay, a thesis, a journal article and a monograph are judged by different readers under different rules. We adapt the editing level, the checks and the boundaries to the document in front of us.

Choosing within editing by document type

Document type changes what good editing means. Coursework and essays are assessed work, so edits are limited by your university's proofreading policy and usually take the form of corrections to surface errors and comments on everything else. Theses and dissertations add length, template requirements and often supervisor approval; consistency across chapters written years apart becomes the main challenge. Journal manuscripts are edited for reviewers and editors, with attention to the target journal's conventions, word limits and reporting guidelines. Books and chapters involve publisher style guides, cross-chapter consistency and, often, multiple authors.

Choose your document type below, and we will combine it with the right editing level. If you are editing a grant proposal or an admissions document, those have their own pages under grant writing and admissions, where the review is tailored to funders' and admissions committees' criteria.
