Confidential, authorship-first academic support

Writing-for-Publication Programs for Faculty and Researchers

Many academics have publishable work sitting in theses, reports and datasets. What they lack is time, structure and feedback. Our writing-for-publication programs provide all three, in a cohort format that builds lasting writing habits and a supportive peer culture in your institution.

  • Clear written scope before work starts
  • Explained so you can defend it yourself
  • Confidential, and you remain the author

Overview

A writing-for-publication program is different from general research training. Participants arrive with material — a completed study, a thesis chapter, a conference paper — and the program's job is to shape it into a manuscript for a specific journal. Workshops cover journal selection, argument and structure, each section of a research article and the submission and review process, with tasks due between sessions.

The format matters as much as the content. Protected writing time (retreats or regular 'shut up and write' sessions), a small peer group that reads each other's drafts and deadlines with accountability are what move manuscripts forward. We combine these with detailed facilitator feedback at two key points: the article plan and the full draft.

Publication ethics runs throughout: authorship criteria, avoiding duplicate publication when adapting a thesis, recognizing predatory journals, appropriate and disclosed use of AI tools, and data transparency. Participants remain the authors; the program builds their capability rather than substituting for it.

Who it’s for and the problems it solves

This is for you if you are…

  • Universities seeking to increase quality publications by faculty, including for accreditation scholarship expectations
  • Doctoral schools helping recent graduates publish from their theses
  • Research institutes, hospitals and government research units with unpublished reports
  • Faculty writing in English as an additional language who want structured feedback
  • Research networks and donors supporting early-career researchers in a region

Common problems we help with

  • Staff have completed research that never reaches publication
  • Manuscripts are desk-rejected for scope, structure or language
  • Researchers are targeted by predatory journals and struggle to tell them apart
  • Authors do not know how to respond to major revisions
  • Writing happens only in rare free weeks, so drafts stall

What’s included — and what isn’t

Included

  • Participant selection criteria and a pre-program manuscript readiness check
  • Workshops on journal selection and aims-and-scope fit, article argument, IMRaD and alternative structures, titles and abstracts, and reporting guidelines relevant to the design (for example CONSORT, PRISMA, STROBE, COREQ)
  • Writing retreat or structured writing sessions with goal setting
  • Peer review circles with a feedback protocol
  • Facilitator feedback on an article plan and one full draft per participant
  • Sessions on cover letters, submission systems, peer review and responding to reviewers
  • Publication ethics: authorship (for example ICMJE criteria), duplicate publication, predatory journals, AI disclosure, data availability
  • Optional language editing pathway for participants writing in English as an additional language
  • Program evaluation tracking drafts completed and manuscripts submitted

Not included

  • Writing manuscripts on participants' behalf or fabricating data or references
  • Ghost or gift authorship arrangements
  • Promising acceptance in any journal or indexing database
  • Submitting manuscripts for participants

What you receive

Program design
Outcomes, schedule, session plans, retreat format and participant commitments.
Workshop materials and templates
Article planning template, reverse outline tool, abstract checklist, response-to-reviewers template and peer feedback protocol.
Individual feedback
Written comments on each participant's article plan and full draft, focused on argument, structure and journal fit.
Ethics guide
A short institutional-ready guide on authorship, duplicate publication, predatory journals and AI disclosure.
Evaluation report
Progress data (plans, drafts, submissions) and recommendations for the next cohort.

How it works

  1. Scoping and selection

Agree goals and cohort size; participants submit a short abstract of their material to confirm readiness.

  2. Launch workshop

Journal targeting and article planning; each participant leaves with a target journal and plan.

  3. Writing phase

Retreat or regular writing sessions, peer circles and themed workshops on each article section.

  4. Draft feedback

Facilitator feedback on full drafts, followed by a revision period.

  5. Submission and beyond

Sessions on submission and peer review; follow-up clinic for participants who receive reviewer comments.

Program elements and frameworks

Structured writing time
Timed writing blocks with goal setting and brief check-ins, a format associated with sustained productivity in academic writing groups.
Journal fit analysis
Reading aims and scope, recent articles and author guidelines to choose a realistic target before drafting.
Reporting guidelines
Design-specific checklists from the EQUATOR Network family, such as CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA 2020 and COREQ, used to strengthen methods reporting.
Peer feedback protocols
Structured questions (for example 'What is the main claim? Where did you get lost?') that make peer review useful rather than polite.
Publication ethics
COPE guidance and ICMJE authorship criteria as reference points for authorship, duplicate publication and misconduct.

From thesis chapter to article

A thesis chapter is written to show examiners everything; an article is written to make one contribution to a specific readership within a word limit. Participants learn to cut the literature review to what the argument needs, compress the methods using reporting guidelines, and lead with the contribution. We also address the ethics of publishing from a thesis, including checking publisher and institutional policies on thesis repositories.

Program formats

Formats are chosen around your staff's realities rather than an ideal schedule.

  • Intensive: a three- to five-day residential or on-campus retreat, followed by online feedback
  • Extended: fortnightly sessions over a semester with writing between meetings
  • Blended: launch workshop, online writing sessions, draft feedback and a closing retreat
  • Clinic-based: shorter support for participants already holding reviewer comments

What the work can look like

Illustrative example — fictional data

Illustrative excerpt: article plan feedback

A fictional participant in a nursing faculty cohort planned an article from a master's dissertation on night-shift fatigue. Details are invented.

Participant's plan

Target: a broad international nursing journal. Contribution: 'explore fatigue among night-shift nurses'. Structure mirrors the dissertation, with a 3,000-word literature review.

Facilitator feedback

Narrow the contribution to the finding that is new — the link between shift-swap practices and self-reported fatigue in a setting that has rarely been studied. Consider a regional or specialty journal whose recent issues include similar cross-sectional studies. Reduce the literature review to about 700 words and use STROBE to structure the methods and results.

Next step

Revised plan and introduction draft due before the next peer circle.

Illustrative example with invented content; real feedback depends on each manuscript.

What you’ll need to provide

  • Participant nominations and protected time for sessions and writing
  • Venue for retreats or an online platform
  • Institutional policies on authorship, research integrity and AI use
  • Library support for journal access and database searches where possible
  • Any institutional publication targets or journal lists used for evaluation

You don’t need everything ready to ask for a quote — tell us what you have and we’ll say what’s missing.

What affects price and turnaround

Price depends on

  • Cohort size and number of cohorts
  • Format (retreat, extended or blended) and travel
  • Amount of individual facilitator feedback per participant
  • Inclusion of language editing for manuscripts
  • Follow-up support period after submission

Turnaround depends on

  • Academic calendar and participants' teaching loads
  • Readiness of participants' material at the start

Every project is quoted individually. How we price our work.

Questions people ask before starting

Do you edit participants' manuscripts?

Facilitator feedback focuses on argument, structure and journal fit. Language editing can be added as a separate pathway, and participants approve all changes. Authors remain responsible for their manuscripts.

Will the program deliver a set number of publications?

No. Journals decide what they publish. We track what the program controls — plans, drafts and submissions — and help authors respond effectively to reviews.

How do you handle predatory journals?

We teach participants to check journal practices themselves: verified indexing claims, transparent peer review and fees, editorial board credibility, and tools such as Think. Check. Submit.

Can co-authors from outside the institution take part?

Usually yes, if your institution agrees and the authorship team shares the program commitments. Authorship decisions follow recognized criteria and are made by the authors.

What about using AI tools in writing?

We cover publisher policies, which commonly prohibit listing AI as an author and require disclosure of use. Participants learn to use tools responsibly within those policies and their institution's rules.
